The style of Walt Whitman (1819-1892)

Recently I've gotten back into writing. I used to write and read poetry a lot, and I haven't done much with it lately. I miss it. Over the summer I really got into Walt Whitman's poetry. If you've ever watched (and payed attention to) the movie The Notebook, you'll recognize his poem "Continuities". I really enjoy his style, and here I'll share a few of my favorite pieces of his.

"Excelsior"

Who has gone farthest? for I would go farther,
And who has been just? for I would be the most just person of the earth,
And who most cautious? for I would be more cautious,
And who has been happiest? O I think it is I--I think no one was
ever happier than I,
And who has lavish'd all? for I lavish constantly the best I have,
And who proudest? for I think I have reason to be the proudest son
alive--for I am the son of the brawny and tall-topt city,
And who has been bold and true? for I would be the boldest and
truest being of the universe,
And who benevolent? for I would show more benevolence than all the rest,
And who has receiv'd the love of the most friends? for I know what
it is to receive the passionate love of many friends,
And who possesses a perfect and enamour'd body? for I do not believe
any one possesses a more perfect or enamour'd body than mine,
And who thinks the amplest thoughts? for I would surround those thoughts,
And who has made hymns fit for the earth? for I am mad with
devouring ecstasy to make joyous hymns for the whole earth.

"Facing West from California's Shores"

Facing west from California's shores,
Inquiring, tireless, seeking what is yet unfound,
I, a child, very old, over waves, towards the house of maternity,
the land of migrations, look afar,
Look off the shores of my Western sea, the circle almost circled;
For starting westward from Hindustan, from the vales of Kashmere,
From Asia, from the north, from the God, the sage, and the hero,
From the south, from the flowery peninsulas and the spice islands,
Long having wander'd since, round the earth having wander'd,
Now I face home again, very pleas'd and joyous,
(But where is what I started for so long ago?
And why is it yet unfound?)

"Full of Life Now"

Full of life now, compact, visible,
I, forty years old the eighty-third year of the States,
To one a century hence or any number of centuries hence,
To you yet unborn these, seeking you.

When you read these I that was visible am become invisible,
Now it is you, compact, visible, realizing my poems, seeking me,
Fancying how happy you were if I could be with you and become your comrade;
Be it as if I were with you. (Be not too certain but I am now with you.)

Excerpt from "I Sing the Body Electric"

5

This is the female form,
A divine nimbus exhales from it from head to foot,
It attracts with fierce undeniable attraction,
I am drawn by its breath as if I were no more than a helpless vapor,
all falls aside but myself and it,
Books, art, religion, time, the visible and solid earth, and what
was expected of heaven or fear'd of hell, are now consumed,
Mad filaments, ungovernable shoots play out of it, the response
likewise ungovernable,
Hair, bosom, hips, bend of legs, negligent falling hands all
diffused, mine too diffused,
Ebb stung by the flow and flow stung by the ebb, love-flesh swelling
and deliciously aching,
Limitless limpid jets of love hot and enormous, quivering jelly of
love, white-blow and delirious nice,
Bridegroom night of love working surely and softly into the prostrate dawn,
Undulating into the willing and yielding day,
Lost in the cleave of the clasping and sweet-flesh'd day.

This the nucleus--after the child is born of woman, man is born of woman,
This the bath of birth, this the merge of small and large, and the
outlet again.

Be not ashamed women, your privilege encloses the rest, and is the
exit of the rest,
You are the gates of the body, and you are the gates of the soul.

The female contains all qualities and tempers them,
She is in her place and moves with perfect balance,
She is all things duly veil'd, she is both passive and active,
She is to conceive daughters as well as sons, and sons as well as daughters.

As I see my soul reflected in Nature,
As I see through a mist, One with inexpressible completeness,
sanity, beauty,
See the bent head and arms folded over the breast, the Female I see.

And so, I decided to write a poem, after being inspired by all of these, in the style of Walt Whitman.

"To Know You"

I bring myself to know you,
to know your eyes, your hair, your smile,
to know your lips and neck, your skin
I know as well, and from there I learn
to know your love, your laugh, your kiss,
to know your walk and touch, your anger
I know as well, so I do not ever anger you,
so I can continue to learn and love you,
to know your dreams, your hopes, your despairs,
to know your wants and needs, I do this
so as you part from me this day,
I can close my eyes and say
I know you
Well enough to bring you back again
someday.

Songs That Make You Feel Better

So, I wrote my english research paper on the positive effects of music on the body. I came across this on Stumble, and I really like it because it goes along with that theme. It's a playlist of songs that "make you feel better", which means that the type of music played will probably have a positive mental effect on you, and will help relax you. Try it out!

Winding Down

So, I made it through my first semester of college. Why do I feel like it's only been a week or two? It went by WAY too fast. I'm so thankful for all the amazing new friends I've made. I can't wait for next semester.

Here are my plans for Christmas Break:

Doesn't that sound perfect? I think I'm gunna lock myself in my house for a whole month and do absolutely nothing. Family time has never sounded so great.

Soooo... here's a few photos to recap my semester. :) enjoy.

Beautiful campus and Beautiful friends :)

Walmart adventures with Sam and Jay

Hockey games :) GO NOOKS!

Late night studying in the lounge.

Dressing... warm.

And finally, wrapping things up after all our finals are finished. Most of us haven't slept much lately... as you can tell. We look a little wired. The guys were on their way outside to take a photo in front of the giant UAF thermometer, which probably read something close to -40.

Goodnight. (Playlist)

There's something so soothing about that song, and you play it often. When you're tired, it tucks you in. When you're lonely, it’s your best friend. When you're sad, it helps you rid your eyes of the tears you hold back. When you're stressed, it rubs your back and makes all your problems disappear. And when you're angry, it holds you close and glares the problem in the face, shaking a fist while whispering soft words of comfort in your ear.
Try these on for size. This is a relaxation playlist, and I bet it’ll help you some way, somehow.
I love these songs because of the way they sound, the way they make me think, or the message behind them. Or, just because they make me feel good.
So, if you can find them, get these. I’ve been meaning to get a media player on my blog. Or a SoundCloud account. Pop in your headphones, sit down, lay down, relax. Enter a world that only consists of your peace of mind and a soothing melody.

Enjoy.

The Wind

Sometimes the wind speaks to me.
I am the wind when it speaks to me.
As I am walking,
no longer do I know time.
For the sound sounds the same
as it has always been.

Oh!
What bliss!
Self -
No more.
Time -
Don't know!

Only Truth, Truth, Truth.
