Pandora Station Favorites

It’s amazing how a system so complex and intricate can be personified and almost loved in a simple, human way… My Pandora station this morning played all my favorite songs, and some new songs that will easily become favorites.

Washed Out and Kap Slap Reviews

It’s getting close to the end of the month, which means my July playlist will be due soon. As weird as this month has been for me socially, it’s been amazing musically. I’ve downloaded full albums of stuff, and it seems like everyone has something new this July. Everyone is busy, including myself. I’ve almost never been this busy.
I’d like to go ahead and share some stuff early, just because I feel like I need to keep up with my blogging and playlists more than I have lately.

The first thing I’ll bring up is the new album by Washed Out, an electronic/alternative sounding band that I don’t really listen to a whole lot. I downloaded their new album Within & Without, and honestly, there are only two of the nine songs that I don’t think I’ll really listen to. It’s that good. Unfortunately, the only other song I know by them is called “Feel It All Around”, from their 2009 album Life of Leisure. As of today, I’ve listened to it 242 times since I downloaded it in January. Within & Without is an album of relaxing, enchanting songs, some of which are almost ambient because the beat is so soft. The album is very put-together, meaning the songs are similar in sound, but are also unique. My favorites are “Amor Fati”, “You & I”, “Within & Without”, and “A Dedication”. These actually happen to be the songs with a more prominent beat, but that’s just my personal preference. Anyhow, listen to the album even if you haven’t heard of them, or if you feel there’s at least a 60% chance you’ll like them, judging from what I’ve written.

For all you “mash up” fans, if you haven’t heard Kap Slap’s AA: Audio Appropriation, you’re a f***ing loser. I’m serious. It’s 10 days old. Get to it. This is one of the most amazing gapless albums I’ve ever heard in my life. It features songs such as LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem”, Eminem’s “Without Me”, Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” (yeah, dope, I know), Miike Snow’s “Silvia”, Ellie Goulding’s “Lights”, Adele’s “Rolling In the Deep”, and tons of other popular party bangers. AA is a solid hour of some of the best mixing in recent history. Anyone who likes to party needs this album. Also, anyone who likes to have their mind blown needs this album. Hook it up to your system, hit play, and dance. The end.

Hinder Gives Fairbanks "Nightmares"

Hinder Gives Fairbanks "Nightmares"
By Alyssa Dunehew
July 11, 2011

Oklahoma City has never looked so good on Fairbanks, Alaska. The alternative metal band Hinder made their first ever appearance here in Fairbanks on Friday, July 8 at the Blue Loon, after their show at El Paso’s Downtown Street Festival. Hinder played at the Palmer State Fair last August to a massive all-ages crowd, and the Loon crowd last Friday sure wasn’t any less. Hinder was probably the most entertaining concert to hit the Loon in a while; it’s not every concert that a lead singer walks out onto the center divider that separates the drinkers and the non-drinkers to be groped by the nearest screaming fans.

Hinder formed back in 2001, created by drummer Cody Hanson, guitarist Joe Garvey, and lead singer Austin Winkler, who met at a college party in Oklahoma City. The band grew after their 2003 release of Far From Close, an EP on the independent label Brickden Records. By 2005 they acquired Bassist Mike Rodden and rhythm guitarist Mark King for their release of Extreme Behavior. The album included the two songs that got Hinder noticed around the world, “Get Stoned” and “Lips of an Angel”, and from there, the rest is a successful history.

Hinder’s new album, All American Nightmare, has been a success as well, since its December 2011 release. The album sold 35,000 copies during its first week on sale in the United States, and debuted on the Billboard 200 chart at number 37. “All American Nightmare” currently sits at #22 on the Billboard Rock Songs chart, the week's most popular alternative, mainstream rock and triple A songs.

The Fairbanks crowd went crazy for the newer songs such as “Hey Ho”, “Striptease”, and “Put That Record On”. By the end of the night, approximately 10 bras of various colors, shapes, and sizes had accumulated across the stage.

So, that’s #22 on the charts, 152,881 Facebook fans, and a 10 on the “bras on stage” scale. That’s what rock n’ roll calls a good night.

For some reason, these last three photos didn't make it to my Flickr set.

Well, they asked for a “Striptease”… Here is one of many articles of lingerie thrown onstage during the Hinder concert at the Blue Loon. July 8, 2011. Alyssa Dunehew

Steven Tyler of Aerosmith was known for his scarf-clad microphone stand... Suppose Austin Winkler of Hinder might have a similar, yet sexier idea?  Hinder performed at the Blue Loon for an all-ages concert on July 8, 2011. Alyssa Dunehew

Reliving My Rock Days

As some of you reading this may know, I got a chance to see Hinder live in concert here in Fairbanks, Alaska last Friday. It was one of the best concerts I've ever been to. I haven't listened to Hinder, or any similar bands in about four years, after my sophomore year of high school, I kind of grew out of it... When I was becoming a freshman in high school, I remember the summer I heard my first Hinder song, "Lips of an Angel". Recently my first boyfriend had cheated on me, and he and I were in the process of working through things. I remember hearing the song for the first time, and just crying my eyes out. The sound of Austin Winkler's voice just seeped right into my bones, I loved every note of it. I've been a Hinder fan ever since. So, here it is, five summers later, and I got to see Hinder perform for the second time in my life (I saw them last fall in Palmer, Alaska). This time, though, seeing them has really got me back into listening to all the old rock music I used to worship. Papa Roach will be performing here next week, and I have the chance to see Chevelle in concert later this fall... I'm REALLY excited.

I created a Pandora station (from previous post) that is turning out well. Here are all of my "Thumbed Up" tracks so far.
